Mosey Jones' "Swell" turns 10
I'm beginning to hate this column cause each and every time it reminds me of how fast time flies and how old I'm getting. MOSEY JONES still feel pretty fresh to me as well as their debut album "Swell". Yet, it turns fucking 10 years old today! The coolest thing is, that these guys haven't disbanded and are currently preparing a new album...
"Swell" was love on first listen for me, back in 2012. I digged the boisterous, rompy and honest sound and in general their unique take on Emo. One thing that totally set them apart from most other, comparable bands was their blend of Emo-feeling and fast Punk-rhythms. This essentially was something like the Punk-version of Midwest-Emo. Sure, there are songs like "Trustbuster", "Take me Home" or "Standing", that are either slower or mix different tempi. Eventhough these songs are important for the whole album, the songs that are totally MOSEY JONES for me are tracks like "Five Years", "I'm a 'K'", "Don't speak" or my absolute favorite song of theirs, "Leaving". These tracks rock like shit while they manage to rip your heart out and tear it into pieces nomatterwhat!
Another nice thing is when they mix things up, with Caitlin taking vocal duties, like in the already mentioned "Standing" or "Laid it on your Girl", the most affective and "out there"-song on "Swell". It seems like this smart little move changes the character of the record completely , though MOSEY JONES always stayed true to their overall stilistics and maintained their charming attitude.
"Swell" stood the test of time and sounds as fresh as 10 years ago. It's one of my favourite Emo-records of this very decade and you should really know it if you call yourself cool!
Love this review- another Mosey fan here, and it reads so true! -Poppy
