Review: meiszel - s/t (EP)

Label: DIY

MEISZEL is the new project by Daniel and David from the German Screamo-act LYPURA. It's not that new though, cause they already started their duo-thingy by 2018 and met every time when a full band practice wasn't possible. Covid then slowed down their progressions with writing and recording songs, but in 2022 we're finally here: At their debut effort.

The two don't really break out from Screamo, but they settle for a different approach. Where LYPURA uses elements of Post-Rock and Ambient to create a multifaceted atmosphere, MEISZEL's tracks are faster, more aggressive and striaght to the point. The distinctive tunes from ORCHID, LOUISE CYPHRE, BATTLE OF WOLF 359 or REPUBLIC OF DREAMS clearly left a mark on this. The apocalyptic mood as well as the trademark-blastbeats and the often downtuned guitar tone will thrill fans of the mentioned bands in no time!

Buuuuut.... it's not that easy! Despite being only 12 minutes long, the debut of the two-piece is really diverse. They also delve into more melodic Emo-territories from time to time or pay homage to German New School-Mosh. A song like "V" (no song titles here but numbers) then walks a completely different route, with a hopeful lead and clean vocals, while "VI" is a near-three minute-long, pulsating Screamo-track, that leaves absolutely nothing out but the... vocals. MEISZEL's half personal, half socially critical lyrics are in German and they also use some samples, therefor it's even harder for me not to compare them to bands like YAGE, DANSE MACABRE, JET BLACK or early AFTERLIFE KIDS.

You probably get it by now. MEISZEL cater to Screamo-traditionalists while feeling modern in their open-minded approach. The record flows flawlessly and most definitely is one of the tightest and most impressive takes on German Screamo in a very very long fucking time...
