Review: In der Welt - s/t
It seems like these guys can't decide what to do, but somehow that results in a pretty interesting record. Hailing from Clermont-Ferrand in France they go with a German name and write English lyrics. They tag themselves as "Post-Metal" though it's really not that easy. No doubt, Post-Metal is the main territory for their debut album, yet they play some small tricks that separate them from akin bands.
There's a distinctive HC-/Mathcore/Noise-Rock-influence in there. They already got a CAVE-IN-comparison and that's more than legit. On top, I get some Screamo-feeling out of the vocals. The voice doesn't have that evil, sinister tone that all those Metal-bands use, the screams are more raw and emotional. Though, I could really see that workin' for fans of Post-Metal/Rock-tinged Screamo-bands like INFANT ISLAND, PORTRAYAL OF GUILT or even ENVY.
You can tell the same about their music. Sure, there's some inevitable Post-Rock-vibe to be found here, but it's no standardized bullshit of repeating the same chords for 5 minutes in a different volume. Instead of separating the harder from the softer parts, like most Post-Metal/Rock-acts, they managed to create a more cohesive sound that melts both "worlds" together. In addition, harder parts vary a lot. At times they're rough and a bit faster, then they are chug-laden or rely on melodic, near-hopeful undertones. Some would call it "dream-y" or even "Shoegaze". Their songwriting is resourceful too. The structure of the songs is unusual at times and they throw in neat ideas to give their songs a different feeling and ultimatley keep their whole record fresh. Check the Garage-Rock-flavoured "Dasein" as a burning example, that song separates itself completely from the rest. On top of that, I like that they get to the point most of the time with songs that see their end in two to five minutes.
A surprisingly good and open-minded record, for a band that goes with a rather odd name. The artwork is cool too.
