"S" seems to be the debut effort by STARSHIP from Japan and they play that kind of modern, mathy Emo of bands like TINY MOVING PARTS and ORIGAMI ANGEL. Just like the latter they're a two-piece with drums, guitars and vocals and... the way they throw these four songs together is very akin to ORIGAMI ANGEL too. You get powerful drumming with fast beats and tricky fills, some guitar noodling, lots of stop'n'go dynamics, and a constant battle of "catchy" versus "complex", though the melodies are always around the corner.
Opener "Close up" is a fully realized hit and also the straightest song on the EP. The other three tracks are more fragmented and "crammed together", yet all of them have at least one cool moment. "S" is 9 minutes in total and the replay value is pretty high. Give this a shot if you're into the mentioned bands or Emo-Math in general!
