"Spring Roots & Lullabies" to support Trans Lifeline

This is the latest compilation by the Bedroom Skramz/DIY Jamz-community that is now... a label too! Rightfully so. The sampler is out for a month now and already got lots of supporters. It's cool to see this movement grow from release to release and as always your money is well spent. This time around the funds go directly to Trans Lifeline.

"Spring Roots & Lullabies" is a cover compilation and the theme is that of picking a band/artist from your home area. I was actually kinda surprised how much response the topic got, as this is their biggest output yet with 36 tracks and a playtime of 100+ minutes. Among "seasoned veterans" like SUBURBAN APATHY (with a stellar version of HOME IS WHERE's hit "Assisted Harakiri"), A RISE AND A FALL OF A DILAPIDATED HOME, CASTLE ROCK BUT SMALLER, PLASTIC DENTS, SON VAE, SOASTASPHRENAS (who once again kill it!) and AGAINST REALISM, you get to know lots and lots of fresh artists to the BSDJ-scene. The sheer amount of these new (or at least new to me) acts is mindblowing and proof enought that the BSDJ-scene is ever growing...

In terms of the covers they chose it's pretty heavy on Screamo and Emo, just as expected. You'll get new versions of tracks by FLOWERS TAPED TO PENS, COLORED MOTH, WORST PARTY EVER, DIKEMBE, HASSAN I SABBAH, ORIGAMI ANGEL, ...HAIKUS and ORCHID. Still, and honestly I don't know half of these acts they're covering. One personal highlight at the beginning is CONTAINMENT's cover of a song by a band called KNUMEARS that actually flew under my radar. Already bookmarked them and got to check 'em soon.

What makes this comp worthwhile throughout is its versatility. AGAINST REALISM -who arranged and mastered the thing- decided for sections that quite differ from another. He starts us off with the pure Screamo, the Bedroom Skramz, the distorted, fucked up Noise by MATTER PLACED OVER WALLS and the kinda strange, kinda original flavour by MIZPAH. We then go into a long, reduced and silent section, started by the awesome "Bagagedrager" by AYLOS AYLOS and continued by covers from songs by THE FLAMING LIPS, THE SPILL CANVAS (good job by HUMAN HEARTS) and ALEX G. What follows is a smooth transition into more electronic territories, ranging from mellow stuff like HEEP OF REEPS (nice Post-Punk-vibe there) to noisy (HENRY CRON) to upbeat (SKRAMZ.Z). I dig that cover of an ABSRDST-song very much! SON VAE then kicks us out with a cover of a seven and a half minute long song by NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL...

As I said before, "Spring Roots & Lullabies" is a long affair and sometimes on the turn of feeling tiring... but then, there comes another artist, and another song that gets your attention. The fact that only 10 of these songs are cracking the 3 minute mark and the whole versatility and different approaches at writing music make up big time for the length.

There were actually some physical copies around, on CD and Tape, but it sold out pretty quick. Just go to their Bandcamp and support this meaninfgul project. And also: It's Bandcamp Friday! So, what are you waiting for?
