Put some cheese on it!
Kid Lightning - s/t Label: Counter Intuitive Records |
You miss the days when Emo was destined to be the next cash cow? When JIMMY EAT WORLD or THE GET UP KIDS got bigger then they intended to? When TAKING BACK SUNDAY and DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL nearly made a Boy Band-thing out of it?! Well, then here's your record of the year!
KID LIGHTNING is the brain child of Bart Thompson (guitar/vox in MOM JEANS) who wrote this 9-track-album and recorded it with his buddies Sam (JUST FRIENDS) and Kurt (ex-JOYCE MANOR). And, what should I tell you but, this is some of the most addictive music I've listened to in a while. They play Emo-Pop at its finest, but if I say "Emo-Pop" I don't mean the tinder, slow kind of Emo-Pop, I mean stuff like DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL, TAKING BACK SUNDAY, FURTHER SEEMS FOREVER, THE ANNIVERSARY or even bits of THE GET UP KIDS, FALL OUT BOY and PANIC! AT THE DISCO. In fact, all these references just count for the general tone of the KID LIGHTNING-debut. For sure, they're not as produced or as cheesy or as mainstream-ish as the latter two, and not as keyboard-heavy as THE ANNIVERSARY. They're also less pretentious as any of those bands. In fact, they're the Lo-Fi-no-bullshit-version of this wave (?) of Emo.
It's 9 songs in 25 minutes and there's not one wasted second. It's hit on hit on hit on hit. The character of the songs is pretty much alike, if you leave out the more rubbish, appropiately titled "What's expected". The other 8 tracks are cheery, up-beat bangers with keyboards, "oohs" and "aahs", intoxicating vocals, infectious melodies, sharp hooks and the best chorusses you'll hear in 2023. There's cheesy-ness to be found too, but the cool kind of cheesy-ness, you know?
This is clearly the most useless review in quite some time, cause there isn't much to write about this record. You need to get into KID LIGHTNING yourself, if you're the slightest bit into pop-ish Emo or emo-ish Punkrock. As much as I respect everything that Bart did before, but these songs are spot on...
