Rec: Son of Deni

SON OF DENI are a new Skramz-act out of Belarus and Poland. They put out their first single "Sunday Supper" a few weeks ago. According to themselves, they're heavily influenced by the british Screamo/Emo-band ALGAE BLOOM. It's cool that SON OF DENI list them as their main influence, as ALGAE BLOOM hasn't been the biggest name as of yet, they're even a bit overlooked at times.

So sure, you'll get your Screamo, and your Midwest-Emo-Twinkling with the two songs that comprise the Single. But the three-piece finds their own way. While the first song is more playful and even includes a nice surprise with that catchy, uplifting part near the end, the second song is more crushing and dramatic, with a duel of atmospheric, crystal-clear guitars versus uneasy harmonies and nervous rhythms. It's pretty amazing how they manage to incorporate all these elements over the course of 6 minutes. From Screamo to Twinkle-Emo to Math-Rock to Post-Hardcore to Post-Rock, it's quite the journey.

There are some neat ideas in this and I like what I'm hearing. It'll be interesting to hear if these two songs are just a showcase of their versatility or if SON OF DENI will be able to keep up this pace for a proper record. Time will (hopefully) tell.
