The Noise in Screamo

OBROA-SKAI - "Science progresses one Funeral at a Time"
Label: Zegema Beach Records

Cool, unusual artwork and an equally cool record title. The first impression of OBROA-SKAI's debut album was spot on. But it didn't last long. Then... they give you 6 minutes of harsh Noise to start off the record. Damn, that's bold.

As someone who prefers a straight, vibrant, catchy start to an album, I had to take it like a stone to the head. But then again, I'm the one who demands something new every once in a while. Something unconventionally. And, it doesn't always have to be the same old, even in an ideologically driven genre like Screamo, right? OBROA-SKAI definitely do their own thing with this Noise-parts sprinkled on their 30+ minutes album. And one thing is for sure, they never go the easy route. So much for "straight" and "catchy". Yet, their blend of Screamo and Noise works better if the Noise comes in small doses. When the opener is past, they don't get as deep into their noisy stuff and that suits them really well. A track like "Into the Void" sounds just like the title might suggest. Bleak, dark, ominous. It's a moody piece that smoothly transitions into "One Hundred and Fifty Years". Speaking of that, the transition from the punishing ending of "Nextdoor" into the Ambient-infused track "Syncope" and into the menacing "Home" is even better.

OBROA-SKAI mostly find a nice flow of chaotic, noisy, scattered and extremely dark Screamo, somehwere between LOMA PRIETA and NUVOLASCURA, yet their songwriting is very quirky, making them a different kind of beast. If you're looking for a Screamo-band that is not afraid of trying something new, than "Science progresses one Funeral at a Time" might just be up your alley. Getting over the shock of the opener, this turned out to be a worthy addition to the genre.
