The true meaning of Christmas
I love christmas. I don't know why, but I do. And since becoming a father I can get even more into it again. Not like crazy silly or something, but on a healthy base. I also like christmas music, but I'm kinda picky about it too, so I stick to the same bunch of christmas songs. I especially like the Rock'n'Roll-tinged stuff like "Run Rudolph Run", "Jingle Bell Rock", "Rockin' around the Christmas Tree" and for sure, "Little Drummer Boy".
When it comes to modern christmas tunes, I always return to "The true meaning of christmas" by the british Post-Hardcore-band BLAKFISH. They brought this out 14 years ago, and year in, year out they don't get enough credit for this breathtaking christmas song. They didn't get enough credit for all of their music, and you should definitely check it out if you haven't already. Their sophomore band &U&I (involving most but not all of BLAFISH's members) was even more well-rounded and matured.
"The true meaning of christmas" is an original christmas song, though they make hints at some classics which makes it even better. And damn, it's a perfectly crafted track, from the catchy chorus to the atmospheric and smart verses. What makes this even more special is the way they laid out the track as well as the video. In the best christmas charity-song-tradition they filmed the recording process of the song, standing collectively together in front of the microphone. They always were funny people and this is also a pretty funny, yet also very touching video. What's cool too is that all of them are singing. Their bass player and their drummer normally didn't get a mic, but it makes this song even more outstanding. That shout-part in the middle, done by their drummer, is the shit.
The scale might be small, but with "The true meaning of christmas" BLAKFISH made themselves a timeless band. Personally I might have already forgotten about them, but I'll most definitely return to this song for the next 10, 20 or 30 years when christmas time hits. I already posted the video like three or four times, but I'll probably do it a few more times. So, here we go again!
Merry christmas everyone!
