Kwakisurpiniku... probably a lost Pokémon or a national dish from South-East Asia
Kwakisurpiniku - "Stillness" Label: DIY |
Nope, KWAKISURPINIKU is no Pokémon and indeed nothing to eat. It's a term from a very funny sketch on "Saturday Night Live", with Mike Myers as the host of a Japanese game show. And KWAKISURPINIKU is the solo-project by Kyle Mindemann, the guy who also does the Emo-project GREEN GRASS FOR MILES.
With KWAKISURPINIKU he dives into Mathcore and Death Metal. Or could you call it "mathy Death-Metal"? On his debut album "Stillness" you'll get pure frenzy, that's for sure. It's very playful, break-y stuff and challenging to say the least. The only breathers are some lounge-y moments that get throw-in from time to time, like the intro and the outro from "River" or the intro from "Anticipatory Grief". They are still bewildering and imaginative, just like the futuristic interlude "Here come the Robots". Other than that, KWAKISURPINIKU is on attack-mode with a sound that feels like DEATH and DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN closed a compromise. The mostly short length of the tracks (it's 9 tracks in 20 minutes) makes it a bit more accesible though and that's a good thing.
Give it a chance if you're into complicated affairs. It's not as funny as the Japanese game show but it's definitely as confusing!
