Review: Courtesy Drop - Argonaut (EP)

Label: Head2Wall Records
In 2013 COURTESY DROP released their wonderfully titled "Songs to drive to; cry, and make Love to". They had me with that title and on top of that their album was one of the better Midwest-Emo-outings of it's time. One year later they followed with their "Stabalize"-EP and then they went on a long hiatus.

2021 marks their comeback with a new EP called "Argonaut". Naturally this sounds way more grown up though it might not appeal to the typical Midwest-Emo-crowd. The 5 new songs are more redefined and polished and more like a mixture between Emo and Indie-Rock. You could probably call this Dream-Pop at times.

At the core this is still heartfelt stuff but more for the matured ears. What I like is that these guys don't go the easy route when it comes to songwriting. It's no cheap vers-chorus-vers-stuff, COURTESY DROP wrote some compelling songs that are at least 4 minutes in length. What didn't catch me as much was the singing. It's passionate, yeah, but I think that spacey tone is a bit too present over the course of these 27 minutes. Then again I'm probably not the right target as I'm not that into Shoegaze or Dream-Pop.

If you like stuff like that or if you love your Emo to be grown up then give "Argonaut" a chance. Also check their label Head2Wall Records as they were releasing some nice music in the last couple of months.
