"mEMOries" Part 37 feat. Anthony (A Fan's POV)
10 years ago, back on the old site, we did start a series called mEMOries. It was all about asking new Emo-bands or other scene affiliates about their all time favourite (Midwest-)Emo-record. It was about nostalgia. And it was about connecting the new with the old. I had big plans for this series, wanted to collect 20 parts and then release some sort of a sampler with an XL-booklet attached, that features all of the text pieces...

Anthony on "waste yrself" by Teen Suicide
I believe these 8 songs by Teen Suicide set the precedent for the modern emo-sound, and were extremely influential on the “bedroom-style” recordings (even in mainstream music) we see a lot more nowadays. This album means a lot to me, due to how intimate the recordings are, and it makes you feel almost connected to the record, as if it’s a lost tape you discovered. And it feels that way too, since I’m sure, like a lot of others, i discovered this album randomly through the YouTube algorithm, and was just interested in hearing what a band named “teen suicide” would sound like.
The sounds were a lot more unpolished than what I was listening to at the time, but held a lot of the same elements, of punk music, with the simplicity in lyrics and length of songs. But there was also the heavy usage of electronic and melodic droning sounds (like on ‘salvia plath’ and ‘haunt me (x3)’) that varied itself from what was out at the time.
I found this band when I was really in a dark place, and felt like this album truly spoke to what I was feeling inside. It’s amazing to see the numbers on these songs now, due to social media, bigger artists sampling, and just naturally growing a bigger fan base, it’s something I never would have guessed given from where they started.
Without this album, I genuinely believe my life would be different. I don’t know in what way, or how, but this album has been the soundtrack through some of my middle school, all of my high school, and college life. I am grateful for this album, and how it’s inspired me, and I’m sure many others, with how DIY this project is, and that truly making it seem like anything is possible.
