"mEMOries" Part 26 feat. Mr. Princess

9 years ago, back on the old site, we did start a series called mEMOries. It was all about asking new Emo-bands or other scene affiliates about their all time favourite (Midwest-)Emo-record. It was about nostalgia. And it was about connecting the new with the old. I had big plans for this series, wanted to collect 20 parts and then release some sort of a sampler with an XL-booklet attached, that features all of the text pieces...

...after 7 parts the series was buried, when the end of borderline fuckup 1.0 was on the horizon. I'm still in love with the idea and tried my best to start a relaunch in 2021, but it mainly was a chore. However, I got back on track somehow, with a lot of support by some lovely people. Now, here's part 26 for your reading pleasure!

MR. PRINCESS from Oberlin, Ohio formed in 2020, put out an EP in 2021 and released their debut album "Ikigai" last year on Flowerpot Records. They're associated with 5th-Wave-Emo though it seems like they took some influences from earlier Emo-waves. MR. PRINCESS-member Justin took over mEMOries Part 26!

Justin Monticue on "Just Married" by Glocca Morra

There are certain albums and bands that stick out throughout a lifetime. Bands that help you get through tough times and bands that illuminate the brightest of times in ones life. I’ve never been much of a fan of the idea of genres and how they isolate bands and music itself. However, emo music is one of the genres that is so subjective; despite the gatekeeping that goes on. Everyone has heard at one time or another the phrase “Emo music derived from the hardcore punk scene in DC during the 1980’s”. Alas, this is the exact expression that had prompted my journey into really understanding the roots and sound of emo music. After a lot of research and deep-diving, that is where i found “midwest emo” and “emo revival”. One of the bands that stuck out most to me was Glocca Morra, especially the album “Just Married”.

Instantly, i fell in love with the vocal melodies and guitar style. At the time, the guitar work sounded like “chaos and order” to me. After obsessing over the album, i really started to hear more and more out of each song. The twinkles, horns, and volume dynamics are things that really got glued to me. As a music appreciator and musician “Just Married” evolved how i experienced music. The song that stuck out most to me was “Eat The Fucking Snow”. I was so captivated and inspired, i wanted nothing more than to pick up my guitar and replicate the techniques that had traveled into my ears. I had never heard anything like it and i knew this was a band that would carry on throughout the years in my life.

Glocca Morra for me, was the band that got me through hardships, and at the same time, brought glory to the days when I’ve felt most alive. I can thank them for far more than simply being a silly good band. They have shaped how i write musically and lyrically. Also, a great band to open up a couple of brews with the cats.
