Review: Zack Fox - Shut the fuck up talking to me

Label: DIY

What the...? Since diving into Hip-Hop, this is probably the first time ever, that I have the urgent wish for an album to be longer. I mean, c'mon! This lasts barely 20 minutes. If you want to see it from another perspective, this should say a lot about the quality of ZACK FOX' debut, or doesn't it?

The guy out of Atlanta, Georgia is a multi-talent and made a name for himself as a standup comedian. Around 2018 he got to know KENNY BEATS and recorded some tracks with him. That's how his Hip-Hop-career got its jumpstart.

Unsurprisingly this gets tossed into the court of "Comedian-Hip-Hop". It's legit, without a doubt. This is some heavy comical stuff, especially lyrics-wise. FOX mocks Rap-stereotypes and in a way this is pure satire. But compared to other acts of this sort, FOX and his producers pack all their goofiness up with solid backbones. "Shut the fuck up talking to me" is never out of hands, it's never too ridiculous, nor is it pretentious, fake or overly primitive. It's funny, but it doesn't need the humor alone to run the show.

FOX is no genius on the mic, yet he has enough talent when it comes to flow and deliverance. He handles himself easily through these short songs and is blessed with a profound production. It's totally oldschool and in the veins of the 80s and 90s, but with the punch of today. Highlights include the pretty damn catchy "Get off my Dick" (produced by KENNY BEATS), the sarcastically tough "Boy I'm on yo Ass" and the smooth "Mind your Business", which is very reminiscent of NAS' "Illmatic". I like that not one of the tracks cracks the 3-minute-mark. This is what saves FOX somehow, cause otherwise the overall simplistic nature and his limited skills would've turned this into a snoozefest. What's annoying though is the abrupt ending, just as the record gets better by the minute. 5 or 6 more songs would've been appreciated.

In essence, "Shut the fuck up talking to me" is no serious business, it's no creative explosion, nor a contender for the Hip-Hop-album of the year. But it's Comedy-Rap done right with a big heart for the oldschool!
