Review: soastasphrenas - Moirae
Label: DIY |
Despite being totally fresh to the scene, SOASTASPHRENAS from Berlin, Germany proved in no-time that they are one of the most exciting acts in all of Euro-Screamo right now. Their single from 2022 as well as their contribution to the "Slava Ukraini"-sampler raised high expectations, and their debut album "Moirae" is there to match them...
The four-piece starts us off, with the stuff that was already known. The opening-two-punch of "Awake as you rot" and "Asleep as you recover" were highlights of the comp, and they haven't lost their efficiency a few months later. "This is going to hurt" is the single from last year and it completes the powerful beginning of "Moirae". At the end of the track SOASTASPHRENAS show their more sensitive site for the first time. In parts like these they clearly remind me of legends like STILL LIFE and INDIAN SUMMER, or even HUMAN HANDS, though their core-sound is nowhere the same. They go from these silent, fragile parts to crushing Emoviolence in the blink of an eye... and that is, what makes them stand out. They pretty much do their thing from there on, without losing a step. For the fact, that SOASTASPHRENAS' debut is only 21 minutes long, it covers a lot of ground, from short and super-fast to longer and Post-Rock-ish ("A Suffering Spirit...") to Mid90s-Emo-style to Screamo-attacks to noisy and more playful parts. The transitions between songs are top-notch and as a result the whole record flows smoothly in its entirety.
If you're into Screamo and haven't done it before, now, you know what to do!
