Here come the Sirens

ON THE MIGHT OF PRINCES' second album "Where you are and where you want to be" became a small cult classic over the course of the last two decades. That might be due to the legendary cover artwork or due to the band's most famous song "For Meg", which closes the album. Or it might be due to the raw emotion it spreads in tons. The fact of the matter is, "Where you are and where you want to be" is ON THE MIGHT OF PRINCES' most well know record and also the one that got the best ratings. Yet, to me personally "Sirens" -their third and last album- marked their pinnacle.

Again I'm throwing the word "due" around like an idiot... and yes, it's definitely due to the fact that "Sirens" introduced me to the band. It was released on Revelation Records and this label was on fire in the early to Mid-2000s, putting out banger after banger. "Sirens" is ON THE MIGHT OF PRINCES' most well defined album by a fucking mile. If you compare it to the two records preceding it, "Sirens" might even come off as calculated and planned. And it is, for sure. It's more technical and constructed, every note is in its perfect place and you can hear and feel the effort that the band put in. "Where you are and where you want to be" was way more loose and felt more spontaneous and naturally. That's probably a thing that most people love so dearly on their second album.

But what I love about "Sirens" is, that they managed to stay true to themselves, while taking a leap forward in terms of production, song- AND album-writing. The whole record flows as smoothly as not many albums before or after. As I already said, every note found its perfect spot, every track has its characteristics, and there's no dull moment to be found. If you put that record on, you get totally lost in it for the next 40+ minutes. It's a masterclass in Emo/Post-Hardcore and one of the best records in an awesome year for music.

"Sirens" actually got a 20th anniversary-remaster last March, and as often as I find remasters to be redundant, I gotta say, this one gives the record a new vibe. "Sirens" already was pretty clean sounding back then if you consider where ON THE MIGHT OF PRINCES came from. But this remaster has the instruments sounding crystal clear, especially the vocals take a profit from it. That remaster hopefully gave some people the chance to catch up on a timeless record.

Regardless if you'll stick to the original or you'll fall in love with the remaster, now you know what should be on today's playlist!
