An original take on Screamo
Basque - "Pain without Hope of Healing" Label: No Funeral Records/Tomb Tree |
BASQUE is a new band out of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada with two members who played in KARLOFF before. One of them, Nathaniel Murray, is also the guy behind No Funeral Records. KARLOFF is a good call when it comes to their debut record "Pain without Hope of Healing". In terms of atmosphere and some sound elements, there are a few simliarities there, but then again, it's more like they deconstructed KARLOFF to reconstruct a new sound with the help of two new members.
BASQUE have a very original, unpredictable take on Screamo/Emoviolence and that's what I totally like about them. It's mathy and playful, yet also aggressive and noisy, and at times even air-y. The part enigmatic, part desperate mood makes it even better! Personally this reminds me a lot of OFF MINOR, though they're nowhere near as jazzy. The bewildering (dis-)harmonies however are from the same cloth! When they throw-in some melody, they get this ORCHID/"Gatefold"-vibe going and for sure, they also have a lot in common with JEROMES DREAM, distortion, feedback, noise, you know?! The whole composition feels totally fresh though, as they go from one extreme to another extreme. Those high, psychedallically notes they weave in from time to time, are something else, for sure!
As much as I love the reliability and the incredibly high "no-bullshit-ratio" of Screamo, as oversaturated I am from time to time. Simply because the genre gets kinda samey. A record like "Pain without Hope of Healing" is one that sticks out to me and makes me realize, that there's always room to explore...
